Remember that help is available should your voice fail you ….
It is not uncommon for novice singers, singing coaches, school teachers and professional voice users who tend spend a lot of time speaking or singing to face issues such as
- vocal fatigue
- sensation of ‘lump in the throat’ that just doesn’t seem to go away
- need to constantly clear throat
- difficulty singing as before – difficulty hitting and sustaining the high notes or even singing for long durations
- need to lower the pitch while singing
- changes in the voice quality – starting to sound hoarse or just ‘different’
In all probability you may not be using the right vocal techniques!
Should any of the symptoms persist for more that 1-2 weeks it would be best to see an ENT surgeon who helps to check if there is anything wrong structurally that is causing your voice to be the way it is.
If there is nothing wrong with your vocal apparatus, it is likely that you may be suffering from what is often called as ‘muscle tension dysphonia‘. The ENT would generally refer you to a Speech Therapist who also specialises in management of voice disorders.
Follow up with a visit to a speech therapist at the earliest. He/She can then help you regain your voice by teaching you the right techniques and strategies to sound good and also help you learn to maintain your voice .
Voice therapy is fun and it works..
